Vagarshak Zakaryan was born in Yerevan. In 1983 he graduated from the Yerevan State Conservatory, then finished postgraduate studies in 1987 in the class of Professor Edward Mirzoyan. 
In 1980 his piano sonata was awarded the first prize at the International Composers Competition in Moscow. 
In the beginning of the 90-s he moved to Moscow, where he worked as head of music department at the publishing house “Praktika”. The idea to publish the Russian edition of The Grove concise Dictionary of Music belongs to him.
From 2003 till 2007 he worked as a deputy director of the "Muzika" publishing house in Moscow.
Vagarshak Zakaryan collaborates with  the outstanding musician Yuri Bashmet. In 2007 the premiere of his work “Gift and Entreaty” was performed by Bashmet at the Bolshoi Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
Currently he lives in Yerevan and devotes himself exclusively to music. His works were performed in the United States of America, Europe and former Soviet countries. 
Zakaryan works both in chamber and symphonic genres. He is the author of theatre and film music.
